Be a Mermate this summer
27 November 2019
The Royal Life Saving Society of WA has launched a new campaign encouraging young people to ‘Be A Mermate’ and lure their friends away from danger when around the water.
be a mermate and look out for you friends
The campaign takes a humorous approach and aims to engage young people and provide them with the confidence to speak up when their mates are being unsafe around the water.
By giving them practical tips for how to talk their mates out of danger, Royal Life Saving WA hopes to turn peer-to-peer messaging into action.
Young people remain at high risk of drowning with the second highest drowning rate of any age group in WA. Last year saw the highest number of fatal drownings involving young people aged 15–24 in WA in the past five years.
Be a Mermate (external site) will run on catch-up and streaming TV and social media channels throughout the summer.
The campaign is part of the Royal Lifesaving Society’s Water Safety program supported by the Department of Health.
