ISDC research-based seminars

The Immunisation, Surveillance and Disease Control (ISDC) program has recently begun providing a platform for research-based seminars that address current immunisation, surveillance, and disease control topics.

The aim of inviting speakers to present research surrounding immunisation, surveillance, and disease control to speak at the Royal Street campus is to provide a platform for various health professionals to engage in relevant research.

Speakers come from a wide range of government, non-government and private organisations and work in a variety of roles including clinical settings, health promotion, disease control, education, and research.

Influenza in Chronic Disease Patients: Understanding the Fundamentals to Improve Patient Care

The WA Health Immunisation, Surveillance and Disease Control Program are hosting a seminar by Dr Kirsty Short entitled ‘Influenza in Chronic Disease Patients: Understanding the Fundamentals to Improve Patient Care.

In 2017 Dr Short established her own independent research group studying influenza virus pathogenesis. Her group works on many different aspects of influenza including how the influenza virus affects different animal species, the role of the immune system in severe influenza virus infections and the interactions between severe influenza and chronic medical conditions such as diabetes and obesity.

Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) vaccine update

Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) is the most common cause of respiratory and breathing infections in children and is a common cause of bronchiolitis and pneumonia in children under one year old. The WA Health Immunisation, Surveillance and Disease Control Program will be hosting a seminar by Prof Janet Englund  where she will provide an update on the work being carried out on the RSV vaccine which aims to protect infants, young children and pregnant women from severe RSV infection.
