COVID-19 update 5 May 2021: WA Health advice following confirmed New South Wales COVID-19 case

WA Health has issued advice for recently returned New South Wales travellers, following a public health alert issued for parts of Sydney today.

New South Wales Health issued the alert following the detection of a positive COVID-19 case in the Sydney community.

WA’s Chief Health Officer Dr Andrew Robertson said any individuals in WA who had visited the New South Wales locations (external site) during the relevant times should get tested immediately for COVID-19 and quarantine for 14 days from their date of exposure. The case was considered to be infectious from 30 April to 4 May.

Recent New South Wales travellers are asked to continue to monitor the NSW Health website via the link above, as new locations are likely to be added.

Dr Robertson said NSW Health was in the process of contact tracing the case and would notify WA Health if any close or casual contacts were found to be in Western Australia to allow for appropriate public health follow up to be taken.

“We believe any risk to WA remains very low, but the situation highlights the importance of remaining vigilant to prevent the chance of any spread of the virus or community transmission in this State.

“We will continue to monitor the situation in New South Wales very closely and issue updated health advice if required,” he said.

Dr Robertson also said that any recent arrivals into WA from New South Wales should remain vigilant and to get tested and isolate immediately if even mild symptoms developed.

WA Health continues to urge anyone with symptoms, such as a fever, headache, cough, sore throat or runny nose, to get tested for COVID-19 and to isolate until they receive a negative result in line with the normal health advice.
