‘This is palliative care’ end of life care campaign

‘This is palliative care’ is a new public health campaign to raise awareness and improve understanding of palliative care in Western Australia.

The campaign challenges the perception that palliative care is only for the final weeks of life and instead shows how engaging in palliative care service early can enhance quality of life.

The campaign works to re-shape the perception of palliative care, removing any hospital beds, tubes or doctor’s appointments, and instead focusing on the possibility palliative care can provide, with idyllic scenes of people continuing to enjoy the activities that they love; baking, walking the dog, gardening and fishing.

The findings of the ‘My Life, My Choice’ report conducted by the Joint Select Committee found many people believe palliative care is for the last few weeks of life, however when accessed early palliative care services can enhance the quality of a person’s life through symptom management, counselling and support to meet cultural obligations.

Objectives

Increase awareness and improve understanding of end-of-life and palliative care in the Western Australian community and encouraged them to:

  1. LEARN about palliative care and end-of-life decision making, visit HealthyWA.wa.gov.au/palliativecare or call the PCWA Helpline on 1800 573 299.
  2. THINK how palliative care could improve quality of life for you or someone you care about.
  3. TALK to family, carers friends and health professionals about palliative care and the type of care you might want now and into the future.
