More than 200,000 adults continue to smoke, but less people are now smoking.
The following data represents a snapshot of smoking in Western Australia.
- In 2017, 9.7% of people aged 18 years and over said they were daily smokers
- In 2017, 4.8% of school students aged 12 to 17 years said they had smoked in the past week.
- In 2017, 96.2% of people report that their home is smoke-free.
People who are homeless, people with mental health problems and other groups of people also smoke at higher rates.
In 2014-15 Aboriginal people in Australia are:
- almost 3 times more likely to smoke than non-Aboriginal people
- 39% Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people aged 15 years and over smoked on a daily basis.
